Canonical (rel=canonical)

Canonical (rel=canonical)

Canonical or Canonical code is a piece of code which is added into the HTML head of a webpage. It helps Google and a few other search engines to check whether a piece of content is original or duplicated from somewhere else.  Thus, your original content should canonical to itself. The contents from other sources should point the canonical to the URL of your own site. You can use Canonicals so that duplicate contents don’t get published.
